FAQs

Why do I need to water my arena surface?
Non-waxed silica sand-based riding surfaces need to be watered to keep them sufficiently firm and compacted. The sand will become increasingly loose if allowed to dry out, putting unnecessary strain on your horse’s legs.

Can I use any type of silica sand for my surface?
Not all types of silica sand are suitable for use as equestrian surfaces. The chemical composition, particle shape and grain size determine how well it will perform, so the sand you use must be graded accordingly.

My surface is riding deep; what can I do?
Equestrian surfaces can ride deep for several reasons; determining why is the first step to finding the correct solution. We highly recommend speaking to our expert team but try levelling and irrigating the surface first.

How do I know if my surface needs topping up?
Ideally, you should include depth checks as part of your regular maintenance regime, recording all your measurements in a logbook. This process will help quickly identify when and where your arena surface is getting low.

Will my surface freeze?
Yes – Surfaces that contain excess water will freeze during cold weather. Waxed footings have a lower freezing point and are generally more resilient to frost, yet will still freeze during adverse conditions.
